How does an individual request a second extension? A second extension, using Form 2688, can be requested extending the due date of an individual return to October 15, and must be filed by August 15. A first extension, using Form 4868, must have been filed by April 15. The second extension requires a reason be entered, and will be accepted in most cases; however it is not automatic like Form 4868.
What are the due dates for individual estimated taxes? The due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15. In some cases it may be advantageous to pay the January 15 state estimate by December 31.
Do you electronically file individual income tax returns?
Yes, we file both federal and California individual income tax returns electronically by default. We can also file first and second extension requests electronically. If a client chooses to opt out, paper returns are sent to you for filing.
What is the electronic filing process?
We prepare the return as usual and send a paper copy to you for review. After review, you sign one page federal and one page state and return them to us. Only then is the return electronically transmitted. Once the returns are accepted, you will receive a confirmation letter from us. Refunds either come in paper or via direct deposit to your checking or savings account.
If I file electronically, do I have to pay right away? No, the return is filed when prepared, and, if a balance is due it is not required to be paid until April 15. Payment is made using a voucher form or via direct withdrawal from your checking account.
